According to legend, Vikings used iolite to reduce glare when checking the sun’s position and so was also called the Viking’s Compass. The name Iolite comes from the Ancient Greek word ‘Ios’ which translates to violet – a nod to the soft and rich purple/purple-blue shading of this mystical, magical stone.
